Prenatal Bodywork Training (32-hours)

This course is a comprehensive 32-hour Prenatal Bodywork Training certificate program, taught by Chelsey Swan, LMT CEIM and adapted from Leslie Stager’s Touch For Birth series. It is packed full of interesting and important information as well as advanced bodywork techniques for pregnancy. This is an intensive and fast-paced course. Chelsey has been active in the local birth community in different capacities for over a decade, and is an expert in perinatal massage.

Pregnancy is a unique experience accompanied by numerous physical adaptations that can lead to a variety of musculoskeletal complaints. In the 32-hour Prenatal Bodywork Training, students will gain a deeper understanding of this potent rite of passage, while learning advanced manual therapy techniques to address common pregnancy concerns including sacroiliac joint pain, leg cramps, uterine ligament spasms, and more. Students will gain confidence with draping and positioning, recognize the difference between pregnancy massage myths and real precautions, and offer effective bodywork techniques that address client’s shifting needs from conception to birth. This class includes a 1.5 hour supervised pregnancy massage clinic where students must demonstrate proficiency. Topics covered in this course are:

  • Common prenatal bodywork concerns, contraindications, and considerations

  • Intake and intake forms

  • Medical Release Forms

  • Demos and practice with a pregnant model: Intake, positioning, techniques

  • Sidelying and semi-reclining bodywork, basic and advanced techniques

  • Belly massage

  • 1.5 hour supervised prenatal clinic with pregnant model

  • Muskuloskeletal and postural changes in pregnancy

  • Office and environmental considerations

  • Communication

  • Informed Consent

  • Acupressure for labor preparation

  • Pelvic rebalancing techniques for pregnancy

  • Stretching the Psoas and quadriceps in pregnancy

  • Navigating prenatal/birth care options

  • Marketing and business

Graduates of this program will be confident in their knowledge and skills in order to meet the specific needs of their pregnant clients. They will be able to use critical thinking to apply the knowledge gained in this course to situations encountered in actual massage practice.

*Chelsey is a qualified continuing education provider for Licensed Massage Therapists in Washington State. According to Washington law, WAC 246-830-475 “Continuing education must be provided by an individual who has at least three years of professional experience in the subject area being taught. Massage therapists have a duty to ensure the continuing education they complete meets the requirements in this section.” Massage therapists outside of Washington State are welcome to attend this class, but are responsible for checking if this class meets their own continuing education requirements. She is currently in the process of becoming an approved provider with NCBTMB and when obtained, this course can receive back-credits.

The course will be held over four consecutive 9-hour days (9am-6pm, with lunch and breaks).

Cancellation Policy: $225 of the full tuition cost is a nonrefundable deposit. Cancellations received by April 1st are refunded all but the $225 nonrefundable fee. Cancellations received by May 1st are refunded 50%. Late cancellations after May 1st are nonrefundable.

COVID-19: We will be following the Washington State masking laws that are in place for massage therapists at the time of the course. Masking requirements will depend on the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2023. If masking is still required in massage settings, as outlined by the Washington State Department of Health, surgical or N95/KN95 masks will be required in the classroom. If the masking requirement has been dropped by that time, masking will be optional.

Pregnancy Massage Fundamentals (8-hours)

This is day 1 of the full Prenatal Bodywork Training program and can be taken separately without registering for the full course. This class will cover the fundamentals and basics of prenatal massage and bodywork. This is a very fast-paced class! During this one day class, students will learn basic sidelying bodywork techniques and will participate in practice trades with a student partner. ***Pregnant models are not available for student massage practice during this class. Students may return in the future to register for the remaining certificate program (days 2-4) if they choose to further their perinatal education and practice with pregnant models.
